I’ve stalled out a little. There’s some point in most games where it kind if just stops going anywhere The beginnings of most games are super exciting. You’re learning about the world around you. There are people to meet and things to do. You care about the characters and you even get to know your virtual self. About two or three hours into it, it just turns into the same...

I beat Pokemon Red in 15 Hours and 55 Minutes (But...
It all seems so…..I don’t know, pointless? It would be great if I could just start Gold or Silver with everything I got in Red, but apparently it doesn’t really work that way. There’s no way I’m going to “catch ‘em all”, what with there being 150 (151) of “‘em”. FINE…I’ll get Mewtwo. FINE. Geesh. I think...

Oh Pokemon. It’s love/hate these past few days. Why can’t it be as simple as when I was 10?

I know it’s foolish to demand any level of realism from Pokemon, but I can’t help be irrationally irritated by the game’s complete disregard for dimension. I’m in Saffron City, which, as you know, is home to Silph Co., which is housed in a very large building in the middle of town. The building is so tall (how tall is it?) that it extends onto the road on the north side of...

So. How much did video games affect our generation? (I’d define, loosely, the generation as being anyone currently between the ages of 17 and 25). Probably more than we’d care to admit it…for instance, Super Mario 64 is responsible for anxiety disorder. It’s just a fact. Ready? THE UNDERWATER LEVEL. Wherein Mario is forced to submerge in murky and uncertain waters...

Pokemon is nothing more than glorified rock-paper-scissors. It’s fun, but I wonder how much of the fun is irony, how much is simple nostalgia and how much is because of the game’s quality? Right now I’d say Pokemon is 35% irony, 40% nostalgia and 100% quality. Pokemon = 175%.

Max and I had our first battle. We met on neutral ground. I was soundly beaten. I blame his cheap Butterfree-centric tactics. We’re battling again when we both reach 15 hours of game time.

Mt. Moon emphasizes the plot problems in this game. I am 10 years old. My mother has just sent me out on a quest. Now I’m wandering around in caves asking strange men to show me their pets.

It’s becoming clear that the most difficult thing about this whole thing is going to be that playing is distracting me from blogging. And everything else. Here’s what’s up: I defeated Brock and I’m in Mt. Moon, which Max insists upon calling Moon Mountain. I’m on my way to Cerulean City to fight Misty and then battle Max. It’s on.

Last post for the night. I already have a 3 member team: a pidgey, a rattata, and my Pikachu. 2 of them are at level 7 and I’m only just heading into the Viridian Forest. When Max and I inevitably battle, I will wreck him. Good Night.

Max #4 - La Nausée
Having second thoughts about Pokemon. I’m sure I will continue, but I certainly lack the interest I had, say….10 years ago. Also, thanks to those that are following this. We appreciate it. Ok. My 10-year old rival (in the game, of course) just kicked my ass.

I promise the number of posts will slow down soon. Anyone who has a history with Pokemon will understand the excitement of starting a new game. But anyway, Oak just caught the wild Pikachu that was about to go crazy on me. I think Pallet town needs some kind of government intervention, because apparently if I take a single step outside the city limits, wild electric rats just attack. Luckily...

I’m about to have a Pikachu forced upon me. I just want to point out that I knowingly took a bullet in choosing Pokemon Yellow as Pikachu will be completely ineffective against Brock in Pewter City. Pikachu won’t have any abilities that can stand up to Brock’s rock Pokemon. Still, I have confidence in my ability to raise an impressive team before then. Having said all of these...

Max #3 - Outside Town, Inside my Head
What the hell is going on? I just left town, and suddenly my chosen monster is “fighting” aggressive rats with overbites. Very confusing, if I wasn’t the nerd that I secretely am. I went to this shop in a town, and was told to deliver a “parcel” to Professor Oak. Fine. I’ll do it. Unfortunately, I’m not permitted to buy any items until I run this...

I just named my rival Maxi. That way it’s a reference to Max Barth and also a reference to Maxi Pads, which I’m sure will upset Max Barth. So for future reference, when I say Max sucks, I mean Max Barth, and when I say Maxi sucks, I mean my in-game rival. Unless I make a typo. Stay with me.

I just chose a monster in Professor Oak’s office. I chose “CHARMANDER”, who apparently is only referred to in all capital letters. Immediately after my decision, my self-evident nemesis Mitch challenges me to a fight. I win. He tells his grandfather and me that he will “Smell [us] later!”. What a jerk.

Ok. My choices for a name are Red, Jack, and Ash. An odd assortment. I choose Max (male sign). I am then asked to tell the Professor what his grandson’s name is. He seems to have forgotten, what with his job of…being the resident expert on things in a small hamlet where ten year olds are given monsters. I choose “Mitch”, because that sounds like an asshole. The Professor says “That’s right, I...

Hey there, Ryan fans. (I said this to create a spirit of rivalry.) I just started up Pokemon Yellow.  Professor Oak (who would have me believe that people call him the POKEMON PROF) is telling me that this world is inhabited by Pokemon. I guess some people use them as pets while others battle them. Professor Oak is trying to establish himself as an outside by saying he doesn’t do either,...

Welcome to Pokémen.
Follow the journey of two (nominal) grown-ups as they venture again into the world of Pokemon. Ryan is playing Pokémon Yellow. Max is playing Pokémon Red. Here we go.
